Picking out an engagement ring for the special person you want to spend the rest of your life with can be a daunting task, especially if you have no prior knowledge of jewelry. At Beaudet Jewelery, we want to make the experience as informative and stress-free as possible. To help you with your choice, we would like you to consider the following.
In addition to diamonds, sapphires have also historically been used in engagement rings because of their hardness and durability. That being said, these are not the only choices. Please ask us if you have a particular gemstone in mind other than a diamond or sapphire. We have a wide selection of gemstones, but not all of them are durable enough to be worn in an "everyday" ring.
Metals commonly used in engagement rings are platinum, gold, and palladium. Platinum, which is the most pure, precious, and rare, is the most durable over long periods of time. Each person usually has a preference as to what color metal they like to wear. While platinum and palladium are strictly white metals, the options for gold are yellow, rose, and white. There has been an increase in sensitivity to white gold because it is usually alloyed with nickel to obtain the white color. If there is a possibility of a sensitivity to nickel, then white gold would not be a good choice unless it is 18kt white gold alloyed with palladium. Either alloy for white gold is no longer as white as it once was, so most manufacturers have taken to plating the metal heavily with Rhodium, which is extremely white. Once worn, the white gold underneath shows through in high contrast and looks decidedly yellow.
Everyone wants to ensure that the ring they are giving will be loved by its wearer. Style is sometimes the most difficult to determine, especially if you want the engagement ring to be a surprise. Take note of the rings currently worn by that special person. Are they simple or ornate? Are they rounded or angular? Is the band width thick or thin? Lifestyle is another consideration. For example, nurses must wear and change gloves throughout the day. An engagement ring with a lower profile would be more easily worn and would not interfere with daily activities.
If you want the proposal to be a complete surprise, obtaining the ring size can be tricky. Although it is helpful to have the correct ring size, we can size the engagement in our store at no extra charge to you. We also may be able to help you figure it out ahead of time without giving it away.
Knowing how much you hope to spend on an engagement ring will help us to provide you with as many options as possible. We are committed to providing you with the best quality ring no matter the size of your budget.
As a general rule, rings of different metals should not be worn in contact with each other. If the engagement ring is platinum, then we recommend the wedding band be platinum as well. To a lesser degree the same applies for gold and palladium.
